The Freemont Troll
A Sometimes Sentient Statue of a Giant Troll
This giant statue of a troll under the Aurora Bridge in Freemont is more than a little unsettling. The hulking colossus can be seen grasping a Volkswagen Beetle and staring out almost longingly from under the overpass.
Reportedly built in 1989 by a commission from the Freemont Art Council, some say that this story is just an explanation for the spontaneous appearance of the troll overnight. Adding to the confusion are the seemingly endless artists, workers, and tourists who frequent Freemont. Stories, rumors, obfuscation, and outright lies are all to be heard regularly when inquiring about the troll.
One thing that almost all of the stories agree on though, is that the Freemont Troll is alive. Some say that he only awakens at night, or on Thursdays, or on the summer solstice. Others say that the troll will only talk to those truly in need. Most city officials steadfastly claim that the troll is a simple statue.
